This post is part of my ongoing series of writing down my thoughts on the Bible passages I read each day. Some days I hope to have great insight that the Lord gives me, and many days, I will likely struggle through the text and not know what to write down based on what I read. My hope and prayer is that as I make this a habit, just as I did daily writing for so long, that I will improve on my ability to read and understand the passages I’m reading. Please keep in mind that many of these posts may be published late at night or with little time studying and simply be my first thoughts after reading. This is in no way a commentary that one should use to discern the Bible, but my own personal thoughts.

Rash vows.

I wonder less about the commandment Jesus gives during his sermon on the mount to not make vows, “either by Heaven, for they are God’s throne, or by the earth, for it is his footstool.”

We’ve already seen a guy make a vow that forced him to kill his daughter because she was the first thing to come out of the house, now we see the king of Israel that would force him to kill his son.

Later in scripture, we will see men make a vow to kill Paul (I think it is) and say that they won’t eat until they do…they don’t, so you wonder if they actually died…or if more likely they shrunk in shame and ended up eating a meal.

Let our yes be yes and our no, no. Anything beyond this comes from the evil one.

Vows are not something to be taken lightly, and this is yet another example of why. This has a special significance to me as I get closer to marriage. Those vows also are not something to be taken lightly.
