A month ago, my plan was to be heading on a plane this week to Alaska.

Up until a week ago, I was still planning to go. 5 days ago, I switched everything around and decided Alaska during the craziness of this pandemic isn’t a good idea. I set my sights smaller. Zion National Park or Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

These I could drive to, so I wouldn’t have to worry about the airport closure situation from Alaska.

Two days ago, we decided that even Zion or Smoky Mountains weren’t a good idea with long drive time, 1 day of prep time available, and unfamiliarity with the sites.

We settled on Arkansas. This morning we head to Arkansas for three days to disconnect from this world for a bit. Some people have discouraged us, accusing us of not taking the warnings from the government seriously. I think quite the opposite. I’ve realized that I will most likely have to hunker down in my house for the next few weeks, if not months, so I may as well do the adventuring I can now.

We are playing it safe. We’re going out in nature. Backpacking and backcountry camping. No campsites. Only contact we’ll have is the gas stations we stop at on the way.

It’s a crazy season, but you can’t forget to get out in nature a bit.
