I arrived in Austin today.

The Where

I can’t move into my apartment until memorial day, so for the next three weeks, my new company was nice enough to let me stay at our office.

The office is on the second floor of a building right on 6th street in Austin. 6th street is known kind of as the bar road in the city, and as it so happens, the office is directly above a bar with ramming music.

Thankfully, I grew up in a house with my sister teaching piano most of the time, so the loud sound honestly doesn’t bother me that much — or at least not yet.

The Feel

In general, it’s a bit of a weird experience. Two years ago I was living in a cabin with no electricity, now I’m living in the heart of downtown in one of the largest cities in the US. Adaptability has definitely been a key factor to my survival.

It adds to the craziness that there’s a big festival of some sort going on outside. Live musicians, tents, etc. From what my new co-worker tells me, it’s crazy here, but it’s not usually THIS crazy. I look forward to seeing some normal nights.

The Projects

Since I’m living at the office, I figured, who else would be better to work on any projects at the office that they’ve been putting off? So I asked my new co-worker to let me know ANYTHING they’ve been trying to do but just haven’t had time. She instantly had two or three ideas.

We have three small rooms in the office. Each of them had a pile of carpet that needed to be put to ground. I spent the last two hours cutting, measuring and doing that. It feels good to start working and start benefiting the company.

I’m going to have to learn a ton when I step into the Account Manager role, but if I can continue also working little side projects, then I can be doubly useful!

My first day of “work” is Monday. But that doesn’t mean I can’t start creating value at my business partner before I even start.
