There’s a fine line between doing something that allows you to rest and doing something because you’re lazy. It can be hard for people who work a lot to know how to rest well without falling into either destructive habits when they rest or even if they rest well, feeling like they have wasted time doing so.

It’s important for us to rest. God created rest when he created the rest of the world and because we are made in His likeness, we also should rest. To be clear, we should also be working the rest of the days. Not half-heartedly, but full-on working. We should be going to bed tired from the day of work that we had.

So tired that by the time that day of rest comes around, it’s needed.

When we work hard, it’s tempting to feel like we should reward ourselves by going into those destructive habits that I mentioned. These can range drastically depending on the person. Maybe it’s eating and gorging yourself. Maybe it’s watching 8 hours of Youtube, maybe it’s sleeping. Everyone has something different that can be destructive.

I challenge you to figure out what it is that you can do that allows you to rest, but also to fall into these habits, and find a day to do it. Have someone keep you accountable in it so that you know that it’s part of the plan and not just because you are feeling lazy and don’t want to do anything.

Rest is important. We should treat it as such.
