We often villainize others in our mind. When someone does something that hurts us, our first tendency is to think that they are purposely trying to make life harder for us. That they are actively working against our benefit.

The truth is that most people don’t think about you at all, let enough think about you enough to want to be the villian of your life. Most people are so focused on themselves and what they do that they may hurt parts of your life but out of accident while trying to make their life better.

The question I was thinking of earlier today was, if everyone could see the true motives behind what every person did, would we be angry more or less?

I think initially we would be angrier. We would see how selfish others were and that so much of what they did was for personal gain and to look better.

However, two things I think would happen.

First, everyone would realize the exact same thing about you. That most of what you do is also based off of your own self-interest. How can you look better by doing x?

Second, once you realized that everyone was in it for themselves you wouldn’t think o them as the villain to your life, you would simply see them as another flawed human being like yourself.

It’s crazy to think what a little forced transparency would do to society.

What do you think would happen if everyone saw your true motives?
