Assessment is an incredibly important skill to have when working on projects or in a business. How can what we’re doing right now be made more efficient? What are we accomplishing now and what steps should be taken to accomplish more?

It’s easy to go into something and take it at face-value, but if you can really dig in and see the pros and cons to everything you do, you become a valuable asset to others. Whether giving life advice to a friend or re-working a marketing strategy for a big company, good assessment is a key component to doing these things well.

I tested out my assessment skills by finding a landing page and figuring out what I thought was good, bad, neutral, unclear, important, unimportant, etc. This is a great exercise because you have an advantage on anyone in this company. What’s your advantage? A first impression.

People who are working in a company are going to know about the business and what they stand for, and they usually have a pretty good idea of what they want. As an outsider, you are able to have the perspective of a first-time customer and assess what you think of it having no insider knowledge of the company.
