If you’ve ever had a tire blow, you know the pain that then ensures. Not only the chaos of potentially being on a busy road, pulling over to the side, putting on the spare tire, loading the other tire into the trunk, etc. but what comes after. You then have to figure out a time to get a new tire or if it’s just a hole in the tire, a time to get it fixed. Maybe it’s because your tire is almost gone anyway so you really need a new one.

When this happens, you have your spare tire on your car, and it’s Wednesday. You’ve got plans tonight and tomorrow night, so you figure that you’ll simply drive to work today and tomorrow (after all, it’s only a couple miles) and then fix the tire on the weekend. Maybe you even mean to fix the tire the next day, but things get away from you so you end up having to push it back.

On the other hand, if this happened and you had no spare tire, what would you do? One option is that you would call your friend and see if you can borrow their car the next couple of days, but my guess is that all of those important things that you had on your agenda for this evening and tomorrow evening just got less important because you had something more urgent come up.

It makes me wonder what other things like this are happening in our life. Maybe that we don’t even realize. Important things that we give spare tires to so that we can neglect them, instead of realizing the importance that they are in our life.

What in your life are you hanging on with a spare tire?
