There are two types of people in this world. People who order the exact same thing every single time they ever go to a restaurant, and people who can’t stand getting the same thing twice in a row.

The latter seem more often to look down on the first. The idea being, I think, that by doing the latter, you open yourself up to being able to experience something even better than you’ve ever had before.

The first have a different mindset. If they’re going to pay for something, they want to make sure that they enjoy it. Why pay money for something that you potentially may not enjoy? They order the burger with no tomato, side of mustard every time they go to this restaurant. They love it. Why should they change it? It’s the “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mindset.

There are pros and cons to both. By sticking to the same order, they’re exactly right, they don’t have to worry about being unpleasantly surprised by something that they may not like. At the same time, the experimenter is also right. There may be something out there that would totally blow their mind, but they’re too busy getting the same thing to try it.

The experimenter is right in the same ways. They’re going to potentially open themselves up to having better food than they’ve ever had before. The con, of course, being that maybe 50% of the things that they try aren’t going to satisfy them as they had hoped.

I happen to think that neither kind of people should switch to the other. The experimenter receives great joy simply in the act of trying something new. Even if they don’t enjoy the new food that they get, they enjoy the process of trying that new thing. This makes them perfect for trying new food out, because it matters less if they enjoy it.

For the first, the person who gets the same thing, they value something different from the experimenter. They value having something good each time. They don’t get as much excitement from trying something new, so it doesn’t make sense for them to always order something from a different part of the menu. They’re not going to get the same enjoyment out of it that the experimenter is going to get.

For most parts of my life, I’m the experimenter, but usually when it comes to food, I’m the guy who’s going to get the ol faithful order. I just love enjoying food too much to risk not liking it sometime.

Both are good and unique, and both probably help restaurants stay in business.
