How many different kinds of writing have entered into the world?

Today, a friend and I spoke about our own writing and how it has helped us to process and think through many things. We both understood that not all of our writing is good. I freely admit that I believe 90% of the content I put out is not great. I try not to put out completely irrelevant content, but with the schedule that I often have, writing takes a bit of a backseat and thus suffers in quality.

However, even in that, if there’s 90-95% that’s not good, that still means that 5% is good. I’ve written about 500 blog posts in the last year and a half, so if you do the math, let’s say for 95% being garbage, that leaves us with 25 good ones. Some people may say that’s a failure, but what I’ll tell you is that those 25 good ones would have never happened without the “failure” of the 475 others.

Two years ago, I had barely written 10 essays in my life, the thought of ever writing something for the outside world was terrifying. Now, it seems like a normal request that I’m used to. That only came through repetition.

There are so many kinds of writings. As my friend and I talked, i realized that, though I am pretty transparent on my blog here, it’s not an outlet for me to write some of what is truly on my heart at times.

I’ve realized that the heart is often dramatic and when you write with the full heart in times of distress or sometimes even joy, it comes out as so dramatic that those who read may think there is be something wrong with the person or that they need help. Maybe they do, but more likely, their heart has the same depth as yours and is communicating that in the best words it knows how.

I have written a few pieces with this kind of dramatic heart, but it isn’t a regular thing. I think it’s often healthy though. It helps us to communicate things immediately that we may not be able to tell anyone right away.

I encourage you to write your thoughts. Especially in this crazy season. For you (and your kids) to be able to go back and look on, I think it’s going to be so valuable.
