There’s an excitement that comes when you make a big purchase. It’s an excitement that brings us back to some of the childhood feeling that we had when we got gifts. A giddy excitement.

Maybe you buy a car or a new piece of gear for backpacking, or new tools, kitchen appliances, etc. Those purchases are exciting. You’re using your money to get something that is going to serve you better. A feeling of hard work and accomplishment. It especially helps if it’s something you can immediately use.

About five minutes ago I booked my flight to Alaska. One of the biggest flights I’ve booked. Flight buying is a little different though because there’s no instant gratification besides telling people, and no one seems to care as much as you do. There’s excitement, don’t get me wrong, but it’s not something you can use so It’s almost a mixed emotion. Knowing how much money you have spent on something that you can’t know is actually going to happen.

I’m extremely excited for my trip to Alaska, but I can’t wait until I get to actually experience something with the money I’ve spent.
