If you’re sitting at the movies with a group of friends, who’s the one in the group who primarily organized the event?

There may have been several contributing parties, but who’s the person there that if they weren’t the rest probably wouldn’t either?

Maybe your friend group is perfect and everyone contributes equally, but in my experience, there tends to be a driver in each friend group. The one who makes things happen. The one who keeps the crew together.

In most of my friend groups growing up, I was this person. For better or for worse. Some people may have hated me being in this role, but it was always what I ended up being in. I liked it. It was tiring sometimes putting so much into each get-together, but I enjoyed the fellowship and community so much that I didn’t mind it.

There was also probably a sense of pride that came from being able to say “if it weren’t for me, none of these people would be here. Completely conceited way of thinking about it.

However, I’ve realized how much I can really appreciate things that I know will go on whether I’m there or not.

For example, there’s a group of people who play Ultimate Frisbee Sunday, Wednesday, and Friday at Zilker Park in Austin TX. What’s exciting about this group for me is how non-dependant on me it is. They’re going to have the games whether I’m there or not. I don’t have to organize it or post about it or anything else. I just show up and other people are there playing.

No pressure. And sometimes, that is a much-needed break.
