This is Part 6 of a weekly series on my growth and development at a software startup in Austin Texas. Click here to view the full series or start at Level 1.

Sometimes you don’t have the time you think you need to finish a project you’re working on. The anxiety is hard to get through knowing you don’t have the time you think you need.

Something I’ve found in every single one of these situations is that life continues on no matter what happens. Usually I end up accomplishing everything I need to, but even on the rare occasions I don’t, the world still goes on.

I had three days and a couple of hours to do a full weeks’ worth of work, and by God’s grace, I believe I was able to do this.

Level Six Stats

Weapons gained:

  • Experience + 2: This was my first experience working outside the office. I struggled to stay focused, as I expected, but it was great experience to understand what kind of focusing I will need to do to work remotely in the future.
  • Connections + 16: Probably the most connections I have made in one weekend. I attended FEEcon for the first time and was able to meet people from all walks of life, from all over the world, all kinds of personalities, all ages. Personal connections and potential business connections. An incredible weekend of conversations.
  • Ability + 4: For me, this weekend at FEEcon, I was really able to learn how to ask better questions to people from other countries. I found that asking personal get-to-know-you questions vs location or professional related questions took people by surprise but was welcomed in a conference with a lot of professional talk. One example of a personal question: what’s one moment or day from your life that you look back on as your favorite moment?
  • Knowledge + 6: This again is attributed to the conference this weekend. I went to several keynotes and breakout sessions that really delved into the world of money, economics, politics and freedom. A lot of new perspectives to hear and think on.
  • Discipline + 10: The fact that my blogging streak didn’t die this week was a huge success in the discipline for me. I had several nights of 2 -4 hours of sleep, but I didn’t let that stop me from making sure I got a post written each night.
  • Organization + 0: Nothing new here.
  • Strength + 0: Went on one hike, that was my complete strength training this week. Going to work in the next month on developing a plan of some sort to become more consistent.

Kills: No kills

Deaths: Honestly, no deaths either. I’ll elaborate more in the entries below.

Outside the Game

Made two extremely close friendships in the space of three days. One, already in the works, one something new.

Because of my sales podcast released at the beginning of this year, I was able to connect with some very cool individuals that I may not have otherwise. People coming up to me saying they listened to it or even a couple people I interviewed that I was able to meet in person and really hit it off with.

Final Takeaways

There is no other way to sum this week up than to say it was a week of connecting.

I worked three 12 hours days so that I could be gone for two days from the office. I still put in some work while I was gone. I was able to make things happen at work while also making things happen for myself.

It was a great and very productive feeling week yet I didn’t have any big accomplishments.

After I get some sleep, I can’t wait to start next week strong.
