Ultimate frisbee has been a big part of my life for the last ten years or so.

Around the age of 11 or 12 I went to a pickup Ultimate game in my hometown of Derby, Kansas, and started playing weekly for almost 7 years. The group changed a lot over the years, but it was always the highlight of every week for me. I met new people, got to play sports, and fellowship with friends I already had.

I developed so many close and lasting friendships through this, and it has caused me to be passionate about Ultimate frisbee wherever I go.

When I went to North Carolina for a year for a mission training program, one of the first things I did on the mountain I lived on was teaching everyone how to play and get weekly or bi-weekly games together.

It’s a sport for me that, even though it exhausts my physical body, it rejuvenates my mind. As a friend of mine said, it actually feels like rest sometimes when we play. We exhaust our body, but it provides rest for other things happening in our life.

I have lived in Missouri now for almost 9 months. When I first got here, one of the very first things I did was look on a website called pickupultimate.com to see if there were people who played in the area, unfortunately, there weren’t any games within about 2-3 hours.

I talked about getting a group or at least a game together for a long time, but just never took the steps to do it.

Today, I finally made it happen. A couple of weeks ago I mentioned to the youth pastor at my church that I would love to get the youth together to play some ultimate frisbee. He was all on board and we planned for two Sunday’s from then to play.

We did today and I had so. Much. Fun.

I had barely played frisbee since I left home almost 9 months ago, so I was dying to play. Being able to play did two things to me.

First, it reinvigorated my love for playing the game. I want to play it all the time now.

Second, it made me mad at myself.

I’ve been here for 9 months and I’m just now getting a game together. Something that I enjoy a ton I let slip through my fingers. The weather would have been hard to play during winter, but still. I had so much time to get a game going.

I’m moving to Austin Texas. Thank the Lord, Austin has a ton of ultimate people in the area with lots of pickup games. My goal is to get connected as fast as possible so that I can join the play down there.

I’ve gone 9 months with no ultimate, it’s time to change that.
