In a conversation I had with a content creator a few weeks ago I asked him how important having a drone was for the video making he does.

He responded with an emphatic “VERY IMPORTANT.”

I mentioned it because I had seen a lot of his videos and seen how cool the shots with the drone are. He said that of course you can do filmmaking without it, but the just take the video creation to a whole new level if you use it right.

He went on to say though that “you better get in quick on using drones.” He described it as the “wild west.” Drones are still new enough that there aren’t a ton of rules or restrictions but he could tell there were more and more of these being put in effect.

At first, I wondered why? Why do there always have to be rules and restrictions on such cool ways of making art?

I had a conversation this evening with some of my family discussing drones, and one of them told me about a drone that was being used near an airport and because of it, the airport had to ground flights until they got the drone to stop.

It hit me why these restrictions often take over. Because of stupid people. To put it bluntly, stupid people ruin the fun for the people who just want to have a good time. By doing something stupid, like flying a drone in airport airspace, the government realizes the power a citizen has to wreak havoc on everyday people, so they react by implementing things to restrict that item.

As my family and I talked, we discussed things we thought they might end up doing. For one, probably insurance and GPS tracking. At all times, your drone is tracked, and if it’s taken off that tracking or it’s found with tracking disabled, it will be a hefty fine. This way they can set up parameters around places like airports and such so that they can shut off any drones themselves and they can also see who owns it, just by looking at the trackers

This kind of thing annoys me. So many people in this world just want to use things for creative and positive gain, but there has to be that one guy who ruins it for everyone.

I love the idea of drones and I hope someday in the near future I’m able to use one to its full potential.

Get involved in the wild west now, like my friend said, it’s not going to have the same freedom for very long.
